The Bible says that God loved us so much that He gave His Son Jesus to die for our sins on a cross of wood.  Why would God go to such extreme measures that He would be willing to allow His Son to die such a cruel death?

First, the Bible tells us in Romans 3:23 that everyone has sinned and failed to meet the perfect standards of God.  Looking at the Ten Commandments given to Moses by God in Exodus 20, all of us in one way or another have told a lie, disobeyed our parents, wanted something that someone else had, and so on.  You may say, I have never murdered someone or committed adultery and those are two of the Ten Commandments.  This may be true but Jesus said in the New Testament that if someone even lusts after a woman, he has committed adultery in his heart already and that hating someone is equivalent with murder.  Jesus was the only One who ever lived who never sinned.

Second, the Bible says in Romans 6:23 that the wages of sin is death.  That means that the fair punishment for our sins is physical death and what the Bible calls the second death, or everlasting separation from God in a place called hell.  Because God is holy and perfect, He must judge the one who is guilty of the crime of sin, who is us.

Thankfully, however, God loved us and did not want to suffer and die in our sins, so He sent His Son Jesus to receive the punishment in His own body that we should have received.   Jesus became our substitute on the cross and because He was perfect and innocent of any wrongdoing, His sacrifice was sufficient for the receiving of God's righteous judgment of the sin of humankind.

That is why when we admit to God that we understand that Jesus died for our sins and was raised to life, we are saved.  Through Jesus, we receive forgiveness of our sins and also everlasting life because in his human body He took our sins and because He was raised to life we too shall be raised to everlasting life after we die.

If you are willing to tell God that you know you are a sinner and that you believe Jesus died for your sins and was raised to life, pray in your own words something like this:

God, I confess to you that I am a sinner.  I believe that You sent Jesus to die for my sins and raised Him to life.  I receive Your gift of eternal life.  Thank you.  Amen.

If you have called out to God from your heart, then He has saved you and you now belong to Jesus.  Begin now to grow in your new faith by doing four primary things:

1. Talk to God as you would a friend, understanding also that He is your Leader as well.

2. Read the Bible, beginning with the gospel of John (the New Living Translation of the Bible is a good version to begin with).

3. Ask God to fill you with Himself, the Holy Spirit, so you will have the power to be His witness to others.

4. Find a Bible-teaching and preaching church where you can experience the love and encouragement of other Christians
